Russia Tourist Guide

Russia is a vast country with the most important and historic cities in the west linked by waterways. The mighty Volga, Europe's longest river, and its network of rivers, lakes and canals, weaves a route between Moscow and the former imperial capital, Saint Petersberg. The River Dnieper - the third longest European river after the Volga and the Danube - flows through Ukraine from Kiev, through Odessa and Yalta to the port Sevastopol on the Black Sea. A cruise along the waterways of Russia and Ukraine is a cultural experience in the footsteps of the Tsars and generations of poets, artists and composers.

A visit to Moscow is a delight - the Kremlin, the government fortress lining Red Square, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Novodevichy Monastery are each a feast for the eyes.

Some of the oldest and most important historic cities of Russia are in the region to the north of Moscow known as the Golden Ring. Here you will see the sweep of Russian styles of art and architecture. St Petersburg is a gem of 18th Century grand architecture and incomparable artistic and historic features. The magnificent Hermitage Museum houses one of the world's greatest art collections in a spectacular setting in the Winter Palace, the stately former residence of the Russian Tsars.

Russia has a number of rivers and lakes that are still used for transportation, and increasingly for tourist trips by cruise boat. The largest lakes in northwest Russia are Lagoda, Onega, Beloye and Ilmen, each set in the natural splendour of magnificent forests.
