Stella Australis

Fjords of Tierra del Fuego (5 Days)

The new 5 deck Stella Australis is an impressive expedition cruiser, offering enthralling cruise itineraries around Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. On board facilities include the impressive Patagonia dining room, which provides a panoramic view and serves regional and international cuisine with a carefully chosen range of Chilean and Argentinean wines. The lounge areas are ideal for relaxing and admiring the spectacular scenery. The Zodiacs will whisk you to shore to explore this remote and intriguing continent at close range, whilst the on board lectures will compliment your cruise experience. The 100 well appointed cabins provide a relaxing retreat, with large picture windows and en suite shower facilities ensuring a comfortable home from home.

Check-in at 1385 O’Higgins Street (Arturo Prat Port) in Punta Arenas between 13:00 and 17:00 hrs on the day of your Australis cruise departure. Board the vessel at 18:00hrs.

Day 1: Punta Arenas

Check in 1385 O’Higgins Street (Arturo Prat Port) in Punta Arenas between 13:00 and 17:00 hrs on the day of your Australis cruise departure. Board the vessel at 18:00hrs. After settling into your cabin, enjoy a welcome cocktail reception on board. Later this evening the ship departs for one of the most remote areas on the planet. Your voyage will take you through the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel as you explore Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, considered to be one of the most breathtaking wilderness regions in the world.

Day 2: Ainsworth Bay - Tuckers Islets

At dawn continue navigating through Almirantazgo Sound, arriving at Ainsworth Bay, inside the Alberto De Agostini National Park. From a distance you may catch a glimpse of the Marinelli Glacier which descends from the Darwin Mountain Range. You will have the opportunity to go ashore at Ainsworth Bay, which harbors copious bird life and a colony of southern elephant seals which can sometimes be spotted from the Zodiacs. Two guided excursions are available: one is along the edge of a stream to a waterfall-and-moss-covered rock face tucked deep inside a pristine sub-polar forest; the other is a more strenuous hike along the crest of a glacial moraine. Later, sail to Tuckers Islets, and, after lunch, take the Zodiac boats to view Magellanic Penguins, which only reside in the Southern Hemisphere, as well as Cormorants. In September and April this excursion is replaced by Brookes Bay where you land for a short walk to approach a glacier.

Day 3: Pia Glacier

Navigate along the main part of the Beagle Channel entering Pia Fjord and boarding the Zodiacs for a Pia Glacier tour. After disembarking take a short hike a look-out point from where there will be a spectacular view of the entire glacier, stretching from high in the mountains, winding its way down until it reaches the sea. After this unforgettable experience, you continue sailing along the northwest arm of the Beagle Channel through the impressive and aptly named “Glacier Alley”.

Day 4: Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

Sail through the Murray Channel and Nassau Bay between Navarino and Hoste islands and drop anchor at historic Wulaia Bay. This area is also renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. In the afternoon cruise across Nassau Bay into the remote archipelago that includes Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, go ashore on the windswept island that harbours legendary Cape Horn - a sheer 425-meter (1,394-foot) high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic, and was often referred to as the "End of the Earth." The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station you have a choice have a choice of three hikes (of increasing degrees of difficulty) that ascend the heavily wooden mountain behind the bay.

Day 5: Ushuaia

Arrive at the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, early this morning and disembark the ship. This marks the end of your expedition cruise.

Disembark in Ushuaia at 08:30 a.m. and 9:30 am according to date of departure.
